WmSteed53: Henry, Is it possible for us common folks to attach a pic to a topic? I have an original ash tray from Art's Muffler Shop on First St which I would like to post a pic of to the neat Ole Cars topic....Bill

Staker45: I've been away from this for awhile and have no clue on how to navigate through it all

dixie66: Aaah, Miss McCallum...(Is she still teaching?)

1.  How many Memory Boarders have been to the Grand Canyon?

2.  What were your first thoughts on seeing it?

Off of the highway that goes between Fredonia, AZ and Hurricane, UT known as the Arizona Strip lies a dirt road that ends AT the Grand Canyon,

The road is marked by a small sign that says Toroweap 62 miles.  Sixty two miles of gravel road, most of which isn't in good shape.  The road ends at the grand canyon and by saying AT the Grand Canyon I mean AT.  Fifty feet farther and you'll drive off the edge of a 3000 foot cliff and terminate in the Colorado river.  There are no hand rails anywhere and is one of the few places in the park where you can be directly above the river.  There are hiking trails to the bottom..Long and difficult trails..There's even a campground on top but unless I had a small trailer, I sure wouldn't tow one in.

Keep this area in mind if you should have the chance to visit..  http://www.nps.gov/grca/planyo…..tuweep.htm

Nope, I've never been to the Grand Canyon.  Got close once, but was running short on time and decided to bypass it.

This is kind of related, so here goes: I remember from one of the Flintstones cartoon shows there was a scene that I chuckle about when I think of it (yeah, I'm chuckling right now). Fred and Wilma and Barney and Betty are all standing about shoulder to shoulder in a circle and there is this big sign in the background that says "Grand Canyon". A little, piddling stream of water is running between their feet through about a half-inch-deep 'gorge' and Fred says something like, "They say this will really be something someday."

I went there for the first time last year and my first thought was, "Whoa, this is big!" I was totally in awe the whole time I was there. I hope I can go back again sometime. My son is in Glendale, AZ, so chances are good.

My first visit to the Grand Canyon was to the North rim just a few years ago.  I’ve heard that to get views of the river, the North rim offers the best river views.  If you like wide, scenic vistas, then visit the South rim.  Anyway, from Angel point on the North rim looking over the Canyon in front of me, I was nearly overwhelmed by its beauty and size.  I’ve never seen a picture that does the real thing any justice.   For me, standing on the North rim, looking across the south rim leaves no doubt that there IS a god…

In 2005 our 3 Sisters Reunion was in Phoenix. My oldest sister was planning on moving there. We spent one day  going to the south rim. It was so majestic. You know that only God could have a hand in making something so beautiful. There was a nesting Eagle that we watch soar for about an hour. Oh the pictures we got. Words can't really describe. I will always cherish that and all our Sister's Reunions.

I have been to the Grand Canyon, the first time I saw it, I was overwhelmed by it vastness and great beauty.  Have been in various locations of it a few more times, and each time I am struck by the shear power of it.   I do not like heights and yet when at the GC, the pull to look down and around overpowers the fear, sort of.  Would love to float the river through it.

Since our second visit to Toroweap we have met some locals here who have told us of other areas along the North rim that are accessable by four wheel drive vehicles.  There are two that we know about and plan to visit later this year after the snow leaves the Kaibab and everything dries out.  We would love to four wheel (ATV) in however they are not allowed anywhere within the National Park boundaries.  The roads aren't that bad unless someone has tried to force their way through muddy spots and have torn up the road bed.

We have met a couple in church who own a tourist based buisness offering jeep/atv tours of some of the back country areas in the Kaibab and also near Zions National Park…They have expessed an interest in making some fun rides with us.  We are familliar with the areas around Kanab and they're more familliar with the area from St George south to Mt Trunbull and west to Mequite, NV.  We've been told we can ride from our house to Mesquite and never have to get off our ATV….
